Volunteers
“I promise to give the time in my life so that Special Olympics athletes can have the time of their lives. I promise to support Special Olympics not just as an expression of charity, but as a form of respect for my fellow human beings. I promise to spread the word of volunteerism because, in giving, I receive so much more in return.”
Volunteers are the backbone of the Special Olympics movement. The time and commitment of volunteers range from a one-day volunteer at an event to responsibilities such as: Executive/Management Team Committee Member
Family and Athlete Outreach Support
Finance/Fundraising Support
Office Support
Coach
Public Relations Support
Volunteer Coordination Support
The two types of volunteers are:
Class B:
The first is a Class B or “day-of” volunteer who volunteers just on the day of events and competitions and has no sustained interaction with our athletes. These are what we call “walk-on” volunteers, meaning no prior experience or greater involvement with Special Olympics is required, and they are essential to Special Olympics Florida being able to host and run competitions. Class B volunteers ages 15 and younger are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent or adult volunteer.

Class A:
The second type of volunteer is a Class A volunteer. Class A volunteers are typically coaches and/or chaperones; people who have sustained interaction with our athletes and have made a more prolonged commitment to the program (e.g., are a coach and therefore have committed 2-3 months a year to volunteering).
All Class A volunteers must complete the Volunteer Class A Volunteer Registration Form – 1-11 REVISED and Volunteer Protective Behaviors .
